Never run a marathon with a man-cold and that if you train hard and follow a properly structured plan for a few months, you smash your PB into oblivion.

No not this Rory - I coughed my way to a dismal 4:26 clocking my #747th Marathon, but the other Rory... Rory Gonzalez.

Talk about commitment, this girl flew in from South America on her way home to Germany to clock 3:46... Some 45 minutes off her times of May this year. I'm very proud of her achievements this year. Although I can't be too soft as she can do a 3:30 I believe :-).

Just shows what can be done and when I'm better its time to bash in a speedy one myself.

Maybe after some R&R with me Jenny who is home today - Yippee!

www.ULTRArace.co.uk - The Home of ULTRArunning in the UK

Location:Salisbury Road,Hillingdon,United Kingdom
Rory Colemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03677108542637970373noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512946602561801293.post-19178431015752646382012-11-16T21:55:00.000+00:002012-11-16T21:56:30.194+00:00Experiment IV - Kate Bush

It's felt like an experiment this week, but in Human Endurance as it's only now that I am starting to feel anything like normal again following my extreme case of Manthrax. This is also after my 'Pholcodine Hangover' of Wednesday morning, I am now very wary of the evil drink... I would point out that it's cheaper per pint than Stella Artois and you wouldn't get angry as you'd pass out after your first half!

Anyway, hopefully it's history now as I am busy sprucing up Pembroke Mansions for Jenny's return on Monday.

More tomorrow...
There's a school of thought that you are your fittest just before you break - well I can vouch for that one! After bashing in 84 miles of hard running at the Druid Challenge at the weekend, getting an elite start along the way, I am now huffing and puffing like Dot Cotton blowing up party balloons...

It's a rarity for me to be under the weather and hopefully the dreaded cough will soon go so people stop telling me to 'Toughen up Buttercup'.
Well I've just been online and filled in my new photo ID needed for my driving licence. As you start filling in the information, it does make you feel like you are entering the world of Big Brother as the Government website wants ALL your information... and I mean ALL. Also it cost me £20!!!

It does seem rather OTT and I have to thank the lady at my local bank who pointed out that it was 'Out of Date' and that I would get a long term prison sentence if I didn't update it immediately.

Strange old world ain't it... maybe I should go to the States as it seems to be chilling out over there and there's more to taking a trip to Colorado and Washington now as they have become the first states to legalise marijuana... wonder when it will happen here? No doubt you will need a licence...

More tomorrow...

OMG it's November already and that means it's Druid's Challenge week and there are three marathons to get in this week for some of us brave enough to weather the elements of a very wet and windy UK. With the huge rainfall this last weekend it doesn't bode well for a trek along The Ridgeway on Friday.

I'm looking forward to it of course as it will drag me three closer to the 750 marathon target I wanted to surpass by the end of this year... but it's a far cry from the 29 degrees that Jenny is 'suffering' in Sydney right now on her hols and at a clear 28 degrees warmer than Doncastershire right now, it does make you realise why people decide to go and live down under.

All I can think is that in a couple of months it can only get better... I don't mind sub-zero temperatures as long as it STOPS RAINING as it really is my personal HELL.

More tomorrow... when I have toughened up a bit. Now where's my feather duster?

Can you believe it but the Mighty Quo are set to play yet another farewell gig some thirty years after their last one back in 1981/2 when I was all set to go and see their final performance EVER. Somehow, and I can't remember the reason why, I didn't go and in hindsight I must have realised back then that it was NEVER going to be the last we'd ever see of the three chord wonders.

BTW if you fancy playing along you can always check this out.

Might be worth going along and seeing what all the fuss was about... they were actually bl%dy good in their day so check 'em out.
The Louis Tussuad's House of Wax in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, which has cult status
on the internet because so many of its models look nothing like the people they
are supposed to represent is in fear of closing. It's a sad day...

The ageing owners Peter and Jane Hayes have been running the wax freak show for almost 60 years now and they have children or family to take over their business.

There are lots of photos of their wax dummies online today and apart from the Kylie one, I didn't get any of them right as they really aren't anything like the real person but I suppose that's part of it's charm. Adolf Hitler and Michael Barrymore are a couple of the villains they feature... I wonder if they have a JS in there?

It would be a shame for it to close though as it's so English...Maybe one of the Dragons will take it on... I'd love to know what Duncan Bannatyne would think of this one!

Apparently 4G went live yesterday in Caerdydd giving the internet a well earned turbo in our area. Only it doesn't seem to have had much impact as the 3G we already have is still dead patchy and NTL has been down all day in some kind of internet conspiracy breakdown.

Yes, I know I need an iPhone 5 to get the maximum benefit of the new Welsh Super-Hiway but as usual with all things mobile phone it would be good to get the previous manifestations correct across the whole country before promising the next big thing and then not delivering...

The annoying thing is that the technology is already there but the support network isn't. I am uploading tonight using my T-mobile Broadband and it's pretty dammed slow even though it's boasting 3G performance when I plug it into my laptop.

Bloody Internet... anyone else feeling the pain?

People are always asking me for my favourite races and runs and I was telling one of my clients earlier tonight about a 40 miler I did in Germany in 2004. The run in question was one of Rudolf Mahlburg's special creations where everyone ran together at the same speed, with fantastic almost military like precision.

It really was a day that I will always remember and it was a magical run thru the vineyards of Baden Baden, that finished in a traditional Christmas Market.

It was pure Bavarian Magic!
Well our annual pilgrimage to Eastbourne and the Beachy Head Marathon was it's usual sparkling self yesterday and in my opinion is the best marathon experience in the UK. It always has been in my mind since I first did it's predecessor the Seven Sisters back in 1999. If you are looking for Marathon X-Factor then this ones for you...

It followed another grand-day-out on Friday at The Woolwich Foot Tunnel Marathon. We made our way thru the tunnel before 25.2 more miles of out and back running along the Thames Path. What it lacked in scenery, it made up for with it's entry of 100 Marathon Club runners, past and present.

The bar has definitely been raised for the next couple of marathons, let's hope it happens at Luton eh?

Did you know there's a special Marathon on Friday in the Woolwich Foot Tunnel. Well the first 800 metres are in it anyway and at a brisk walk I hasten to mention. Nice idea though as back in 2000 we ran a similar race in the Greenwich Foot Tunnel to mark it's centenary too and it was a great success.

As I remember it was a very colourful night running 57 up and downs of the tunnel, which eventually made the walls sweat and made everyone go grey with oxygen deficiency. It was the talk of the 100MC for sometime afterwards.

Well here we are celebrating exactly 100 years of something we take for granted but at the time the tunnel was state of the art stuff. In fact the tunnel engineer, Maurice Fitzmaurice was knighted soon afterwards in 1912.

Maybe we'll give him and all those who dug the tunnel a thought on Friday, the 100th Anniversary of it's opening and also to 100MC member Tad Lancucki whose idea it was to run this marathon but sadly died before the 100 year anniversary came up.Rory Colemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03677108542637970373noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512946602561801293.post-31738852557278043962012-10-23T08:40:00.002+01:002012-10-23T08:40:20.953+01:00End of an Era - Midnight Juggernaut

My word Ceefax is being switched off for good... yep it's the end of another era. It was state of the art stuff back in 1972 when the transistor world was flying high with Concorde and the jet age. Isn't it funny how something that was so advanced at the time is now seen as being totally past it and redundant.

Ceefax did have it's quirks of course - can you remember just missing the page you wanted to see and then having to wait ages for it to come around again? I didn't ever book a holiday on it as it would have been murder. Did you? I did use the TV pages as I remember though oh and the quiz page, although it was so slow you were likely to get a birthday card before the answers.

The Nokia Phone and CD are already destined...
If you are going to The Marathon des Sables Expo on Saturday, well I'll see you there. I'm looking forward to seeing my old chum MdS Race Director, Patrick Bauer and meeting Sir Ranulph Fiennes of 7 marathons in 7 days fame...Thinking about it I could give him a few pointers with my 43 ultras in 43 days.... hmm maybe I'll have a pep talk with Sir Ran.

Anyway, I will be blasting on about training of course, especially as I had four of my Performance Coaching Clients set new PB's at the weekend and I am already seeing huge differences in my training and performance with my uplift in speed, diet and distance.

Being able to do this stuff at 50 feels very important to me still and it's a good thing it's not about the winning like it is for Paula Radcliffe (btw she'd win ANY road race in the UK by miles and they take her funding away even at nearly 39), but is for me to see if I can be MY best...

Whatever that is...

Are you running YOUR best or is there still some in 'The Tank Frank'... I bet there is...Rory Colemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03677108542637970373noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512946602561801293.post-32451974497265490312012-10-09T09:24:00.003+01:002012-10-09T09:24:44.004+01:00Say it right - Nelly Furtado

If you say your going to do something... then make sure you do it as it's far too easy to back out or give up. Being committed to the task brings massive rewards in the long run and more and more we are seeing people prepared to give everything they've got to make sure they get to the finish line.

It's fascinating that we see great performances from people who haven't even necessarily peaked in their training but just because they have completed EVERY session they have succeeded in doing well.

There's a huge difference between training and performance... Every run or gym session isn't a do or die. Yes they can be very hard but they are designed to strengthen and prepare. But doing the training makes all the difference - you have to put the miles in.

We see this over and over again with folk doing The Marathon des Sables. People get all fired up when they enter and love buying the kit then don't train for The Worlds Toughest Race. If you are running the MdS next year and you have been to see me... are you doing all of your plan? If you're not, please start as you will do a whole lot better in Morocco believe me.

I intend to do well next year, do you? Are you committed to the task or just talking about it...

Sometimes you have to listen to the voice in your head and get your head down and get some 'Miles in the bank Frank', especially following our Nottingham ULTRA yesterday. All that bl%dy speedwork has been worth it and on Saturday when we were marking the course, I felt on fire and ran with real tempo and ease.

In fact it made me a bit cheesed off that I wasn't running in the race itself as I'm sure I would have had a great race... ah well. It's one of the problems of staging races yourself as I would have done my old favourite the amazingly, unamazing Mablethorpe Marathon. Congratulations BTW to Paul Nicholls running his first marathon there yesterday.

It did make my 10 miler easier today as well so hopefully it bodes well for a good run up to The Druids Challenge next month.

Let's hope I keep talking myself up to the task ahead...

I've just started to look really closely at the speed of my training runs as I am fully aware that I need to speed up a tad... And I've found that it's amazing how many of them are either at 8.37 or 8.52 pace. It seems that I have an inbuilt speed metronome, sadly one that's fixed on a too slower speed for my liking...

So it's time for stepping up the pace and bringing on the speed as I would really like to achieve some fast times before the end of the year.

It's not going to be easy but with my far speedier critics Jenny and Mick snapping passing the odd rib-jabbing comment no doubt I will make in-roads in my need for speed and this 9 minute man might become an 8 minute man once again...

Well it had to happen sooner or later I expect but yes, someone (he was 2years old for heavens sake) referred to me as Granddad when I was in the Wacky Warehouse with my daughter Pearl (7) yesterday.

I wasn't too pi55ed off as he was 2 BUT it did dent my ego and all I can say is that the poor lighting didn't help to hide my craggy old chops.

Pearl of course thought it most amusing and possibly I could quite easily be a Granddad with other children of 21 and 24... Especially in Long Eaton!

I'm going to take it as a compliment that this is the first of many future Dad/Granddad mistakes that are going to happen from now on. Then again it doesn't matter what people think... Pearl and I know who's who.
Did you know it's just 12 weeks until Christmas... yeah it doesn't sound that brilliant does it? Anyway every cloud and all that and what it does mean is that there's the perfect time span between now and the festive period to make a huge difference to your fitness and race performances.

As you know, I am right at the start of my big push towards next springs big marathons but I am wondering what YOU have in your sights for 2013 and whether you can make the rest of the year really count for you just like my clients... Andy, Aurora, Patrick and Peter have in the last couple of weeks...
Who needs the extra motivation?

Well after a month of virtual inactivity, for me anyway, I feel like I'm back out there in the world of running banging in the miles again. We are told that a rest from exercise does you the world of good and gives the body time to recover from the stresses and strains it undertakes when doing extreme exercising... I'm sure it does but during the time off it does make you feel just a bit rubbish and does make you wonder if you'll ever get back to your previous best.

I've got quite a few marathons coming up this autumn and some renewed vigour will hopefully help me bash out some over 50+ performances that I can be proud of...

Do you ever take a break?

Now if you are a regular blog-reader, you'll know I'm not into the old Lady GaGa music, I'm more of a Radio GaGa man... however, I am interested in what is trending newswise and what is seen by the general public as news or as being important to value comment etc.

Take the picture of GaGa for instance and it's top news on MSN this morning showing a rather more rounded raunchy songstress than we have previously been used to seeing. Apparently it's her 'Body Revolution'...On further investigation, GaGa has gone on to say that she is happy with her new +25lbs size on twitter. I'm sure she's not...

Is the Lady heading down a Britney route of self image destruction? Let's hope not eh... she needs to take heed of Madonna's best part of 30 year s'success has been based around being lean and sexy... There's a lot to learn from Old Maj about longevity in the limelight as you have to work extremely hard to get your goal but even harder to stay there...

I'm not sure if The GaGa is coming to Cardiff but if she is I'll quite happily get her down to the gym and run a few miles with her to shake off those extra pounds like lots of my clients do, very easily.

I'll even give her a free 12 week plan... as long as she promises not to sing! Can you run in fishnets btw?
Whatever happened to the good old 12 inch record eh? For the young at heart, this was a 30cm vinyl record the same size as an LP but played at 45rpm which were extended mixes of popular songs mainly of the 80's with lots of added scratches, blips and wow and flutter.

I've been out running today listening to some great songs, rather poorly extended in some cases but strangely motivating none-the-less in glorious MP4's.

There's nothing better than a bit of extended Spandau Ballet or Duran Duran you know... What's your favourite as I would love to know....Rory Colemanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03677108542637970373noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8512946602561801293.post-18616798782131838132012-09-24T22:59:00.000+01:002012-09-24T22:59:19.803+01:00Forever Autumn - Justin Hayward

Well it's Autumn and it's official as it's been lashing it down all day. I have finally managed to get my trainers on and get back out running following my three week sabbatical in Poland and Ireland. It turned out far better than I thought it would and I really enjoyed my 6km tempo run. So I am off to a good start... Let's hope that tomorrow's 10 miler proves just as easy...

I must say that I'm looking forward to stacking in a lot of running this Autumn especially after the Nottingham ULTRA in early October as I have to get race fit for The Woolwich Foot Tunnel and Beachy Head Marathons later in the month.

Might shift some of my M2M Ultra spare tyre!

More tomorrow...
That's how it feels anyway as I've been to Poland and then to Ireland on two very different running events with some amazingly driven individuals. The World 24 hour Championships in Katowice gave me the opportunity not only of supporting Jenny on her maiden voyage into international running but also to witness the worlds top endurance athletes battle it out for the World and European medals.

I even got to see Greek running legend Yiannis Kourous in the flesh too... and yes he's still awesome at 56 years of age. I'd like to say there's hope for us all but there isn't in Yiannis' case as he is literally one of a kind.

Anyway, less of Poland and more of our M2M Ultra event in Ireland... and it was a brilliant 11 days as our runners ran the 345 miles from Malin Head to Mizen Head. It was a shame that we didn't have more runners and potentially some help from the 100 Marathon Clubs of Great Britain and of Ireland might help swell the numbers if they remove a rather silly rule that the daily stages of 30 miles or so don't count as marathons... as if they did people could add 10 to their tally of marathons in one easy go. I'm sure the organisers of Brathay 10 in 10 would agree with me on this one.

What I do know is that you can share the highs and lows of the M2M on www.m2multra.blogspot.co.uk and if you are interested in running in the event in the future please let us know. And also that it's great being back home in WALES... ARAF...

More tomorrow...
